Shuyan Chen is a craftsperson, bibliophile, pluviophile, and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design.

She wrote and illustrated her first picture book, A Ballad of Reverie, at the age of ten, and has kept daydreaming and making books since. She sits upon a peculiar balance of having grown up in the contemporary East and aesthetically leaning towards the historical West. She enjoys traditional approaches the most. Many of her works are research-driven. Nature is an increasingly important source of inspiration for her. Story is perhaps still her favorite medium.

She would like to thank Jimmy Liao, Mori Azamino, Hugh Thomson, and Jill Barklem for illuminating her way.

Outside her studio, one might find her busying about the kitchen, or in front of some instrument trying to learn a tune or two.
